The availability of images and materials in our contemporary urban environment is so plentiful that it is hard to ignore. For the past five years, I have been exploring the use of a variety of materials in my work. Drawing, painting, transfers, pen and ink, pencil and other materials are each incorporated at different times.
Using paper or canvas as a base, I experiment with a range of found and collected materials and images. The process is exciting. As in painting, mixed media allows me to play with visual and actual textures, color, shape, and line, to create dynamic compositions in dialogue with our urban environment. The pieces have become more layered over time with images, text, paint, and textures. Each piece arrives at its own content directed by the mood, materials used, and images; reflecting on our condition as residents of an image saturated reality.
